Spay and neuter for small mammals

Preventive spay and neuter for rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rats, mice, hamsters, and other small mammals is available here as surgical medicine — not a high-volume assembly line. Pre-surgical assessment, anesthesia monitoring, and recovery planning are part of the visit. Species and age gates apply. Call before you assume a slot exists this week.

Community program (qualifying owners)

On a recurring basis we offer a community spay/neuter option for qualifying owners. Eligibility has required proof of Florida residency (driver’s license or state-issued ID) plus current public assistance documentation such as food stamps, Medicaid, SSI, Jackson Memorial Hospital clinic cards, or TANF. Pets must be healthy with no signs of current or pre-existing medical conditions that make the community slot inappropriate.

Age gates that have applied to the community program:

• Guinea pigs and chinchillas — older than 4 months and younger than 8 months
• Rabbits — older than 4 months and younger than 1 year
• Rats, mice, and hamsters — older than 3 months and younger than 6 months

Species not on that list are considered under standard hospital pricing. The hospital assigns the surgery date. Community-program fees have been non-refundable on the live policy. There is not a published official wait list — call.

Appointments are scheduled during hospital days; pre-surgical blood work and safety measures appropriate to the patient are part of how we run surgery. Overnight stay may be recommended when the case needs it.
